In this video, I introduce a project that’s deeply personal to me, The Truth in Truth and Reconciliation Educational Board Game. I’m James Darin Corbiere, or Wab Makun (Little White Bear), an artist, educator, former police officer, and Anishinaabe language teacher from Wiikwemkoong on Manitoulin Island.
This game is my way of helping others understand the impact of colonization on Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Designed for ages 14 and up, it’s both a teaching tool and a call to reflect. As players circle Turtle Island, Indigenous players try to protect their land, language, culture, and identity while Church and Crown players impose colonial challenges. Along the way, you’ll draw truth and consequence cards that shed light on real policies and events. The goal? Survive colonization by earning four eagle feathers before your resources run out.
The game includes over 600 pieces, a detailed guidebook for classroom use, and a companion graphic novel, Tales of the Firekeeper. There's also an elementary version that will be available in September 2025 and a later there will be a follow-up game focused on Reconciliation. This work is more than a game. It’s part of my own healing, and a way to share truth and spark conversations for Reconciliation.
Miigwetch, Miigwetch, Miigwetch for your support!
